Record Arctic Melt Makes Mark in 2007
By Jason Witt
When you receive the Seal you begin to care for the earth. You begin to take action against the evil of global warming which unfortunately has increased beyond projections in one key area--the arctic.
The year 2007 was a record year for the melting of ice in the arctic region, and it has puzzled scientists. What they had predicted was bad enough. What happened in 2007 was even worse.
The year 2005 was a particularly bad year for the melting of the ice. But scientists have typically seen bad years followed by a few years not so bad before seeing another bad year. Not so this year.
There was only one year that was not so bad--2006. Then in 2007 again was a catastrophic melting. The year 2007 is setting records for ice melting in the arctic region.
The permafrost in Alaska is showing increased temperatures. Temperatures taken 66 feet underground in the permafrost show a rise of two-fifths of a degree in just one year from 2006 to 2007.
In the summer of 2007 15 percent more ice melted from the Greenland ice sheet than during the average summer. It broke the record that 2005 had previously set for melting.
In the summer of 2007 12 percent more ice than the previous record year 2005 melted. That is almost four times the amount of ice that melted in 1992, showing how quickly global warming is compounding.
There was 23 percent less ice floating in the arctic sea in the summer of 2007 than the previous record low of ice. This is disrupting the habitat of wildlife and has opened the Northwest Passage to shipping for the first time in recorded history.
The arctic sea ice is also thinner than it has been previously. Since it is thinner it will melt more quickly in future years, even if they are not record-breaking years for the actual warming itself.
And the arctic sea ice is a compounding area for global warming. It seems that arctic sea ice reflects 80 percent of the heat of the sun from the earth. Without the ice to reflect the heat 90 percent of it goes into the oceans.
When the oceans are warmer more ice melts. And as more ice melts more heat yet gets into the oceans. The ice is really necessary to slow down global warming. And it is disappearing fast.
Recently scientists have made the frightening prediction that at the levels the ice is melting the arctic ice could be completely gone by the year 2040. But shockingly if 2007 levels are sustained it would be gone by 2012!
NASA scientists say the arctic is considered the canary in the coal mine. Now the canary is dead and it is a certain sign it is time to evacuate the coal mine.
Global warming is a certain sign of the end times. This is the "summer" Jesus Christ told about. When you see the summer, you know that the end is near. But it can be reversed, probably with widespread use of alternative energy.
You have a personal responsibility not to pollute the earth. And when you are sealed you will want to take care of the earth and do your part. But you will also have personal responsibility to get right with God.
If you are not sealed and you do not want to be then you need to come to God in your own way and on your own terms. But you need to come to God because the world as you know it is ending. And that is why you should receive the Seal.
